Chapter 13

WHEN OUR BODIES HAVE stopped quivering, Jamie pulls himself off me, wraps up the condom, and shrugs into his jeans. “I’ll show you the kitchen. There’s more food in that pantry than in a 7-Eleven.”

I smooth my skirt, then my hair, and slip into my flats. “Good. ‘Cause I’m hungry.”

More like starving.

Jamie isn’t lying. The kitchen is huge. There’s fresh food, frozen food, and a thousand cans of everything under the sun. “Who lives here?” I ask.

He purses his lips. “My mother’s the constant—well, at least since she got divorced seven years ago. My father, we don’t have much to do with him. It’s her house. Everyone, from me and my brother to our cousins and family friends, we all take turns crashing here regularly. It’s the Kendricks’ home base, you could say.”

He digs through the fridge until he has a rainbow assortment of ingredients on the bench, and he’s prepping something. “I’ll make you my specialty. Fried capsicum with savory mince. You’ll love it.” A frying pan comes out, and he bangs and knocks plates and cutlery, the noise so loud I’m surprised Angela hasn’t called the cops.

I eye the staircase, a nail in my mouth.

He glances in my direction. “She won’t come down. She’s either asleep or working. Check the second room on your right. That’s her office.”

I tug on my earlobe. “You want me to barge into her office?”

“She won’t be in there. Then you’ll know, and you can stop freaking out.” He leans forward and kisses me. “And if she is, tell her I’m making food.”

My brow hurts from being pinched so tightly, but I suppose Jamie’s right. If she’s in the next room as I’m strolling in her house with no underwear, I’d rather know. “Okay.”

I tippy-toe through the open kitchen, then the massive foyer, until I’m standing in front of Angela’s office. I peer through the open doors, and gasp when my brain takes in what I’m looking at.

The room is what I expected. Classy, affluent. Of good taste. There’s a mahogany desk in the corner, a state-of-the-art laptop that’s probably lighter than my watch, and a bookshelf that holds more books than the Brisbane State Library. There’re armchairs around a coffee table, flyers and tissues stacked neatly between the seats.

Who visits her to cry?

That’s not just an office. Once I’ve made sure that Angela isn’t inside, I step into the sanctuary, and freeze when my eyes catch the art hanging on the wall.

A couple making love, their limbs intertwined as they share an intimate moment. My eyes look away, my heart beating like I’ve been caught prying.

I run a finger along the bookshelves, my mind processing each title, every new one more specific than the last.

I narrow my eyes and zone in on the statues in the glass cabinet. They’re all naked, and they’re either having sex or masturbating. I lurch away.

What have I walked into?

My back hits a wall, and I pivot until I’m facing a larger table—on top of it, sex toys galore.
